Welcome to the 28th issue of the NFT Humpday Report, a weekly column covering and providing embedded analysis on the NFT economy’s biggest topics du jour. Brought to you by WIP meetup collaborators and nft42 community hub TokenSmart.
Mainstream giants and cryptoeconomy stalwarts are joining forces to judge NFTs: The Pitch, a Shark Tank-esque pitchoff event that will see 30 NFT project finalists competing for over $1M in investments.
The details: NFTs: The Pitch is being backed by a $1M investment from Sound Ventures, the VC fund created by Ashton Kutcher and Guy Oseary. Applications opened up on Apr. 5th and will run until Apr. 12th, after which the 30 finalists will be notified by Apr. 16th. The pitchoff, which will be entirely virtual, will be judged on Apr. 21st.
The judges:
Mark Cuban - Billionaire entrepreneur, Shark Tank judge, and owner of the Dallas Mavericks. He’s recently been diving deeply into Ethereum, DeFi, and NFTs.
Ashton Kutcher - Actor, entrepreneur, VC. He’s previously auctioned off an NFT through Cryptograph, so he has some familiarity with the space.
Guy Oseary - An acclaimed talent manager, also a VC.
Snoop Dogg - The legendary American rapper needs no introduction. But he has notably been getting more involved with NFTs lately. He held an NFT drop through Crypto.com, offered Pransky some love, and gave a shout out to OG cryptoartist frankynines. So he’s definitely down with NFTs.
Linda Xie - Co-founder of Scalar Capital. A top-tier cryptoeconomy mind and writer of preeminent guides on DeFi, NFTs, and DAOs.
MetaKovan - Co-founder of NFT project Metapurse. Purchaser of the +$69M Beeple piece as auctioned by Christie’s.
WhaleShark - NFT collector and entrepreneur, creator of the $WHALE social currency.
3LAU - DJ and producer who’s also become a star and embedded user of the cryptoeconomy and NFT ecosystem.
What they’re looking for: According to the event’s FAQ, the judges are open to just about anything. What matters most is that applicants are really committed to building out their submissions, as the site reads:
“Anyone around the world who is innovating with NFTs [can apply], whether it's just an idea or a product in market. Those applying should be interested in building a company over the long-term.”
Why it matters: The virtual pitchoff event won’t be streamed live, so the general public isn’t going to get to see how exactly the finalists fare. Even still, though, we can expect a few things to happen.
First, the contest will drive an acute wave of mainstream interest toward NFTs as its progress continues to be publicized.
Secondly, and more obviously more importantly, the $1M prize pool can help a few of the promising participating NFT efforts get a serious leg up going forward. It seems the $1M commitment isn’t going to a single team but rather can be divvied up at the judges’ discretion, so multiple projects can earn a big early boost — both in money and in social capital — if they’re selected.
Lastly, it’s clear that some of the celebrity judges really have the NFT bug, e.g. Mark Cuban and Snoop Dogg, so look for NFTs: The Pitch to just be the latest among many coming forays around NFTs for them. This, in turn, will bring in more attention from their fans, friends, colleagues, and rivals.
Should you apply: Maybe you’ve been kicking around a great NFT enterprise in your head for a while, or better yet maybe you’ve even started building that business out. This pitchoff event could be perfect for you, then.
Probably the main question you have to ask yourself is, “Am I going to be passionate about building this project for years to come?” If your answer’s yes, then it couldn’t hurt to apply. You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take, right!
Thanks for reading the 28th NFT Humpday Report! Check back this time next week for more excellent NFT ecosystem coverage! Cheers🌠
So when you count how many beats are in one minute of a song played at a specific tempo, you can quickly determine the Beats Per Minute or BPM counter. And if you're pressed for time, count the beats in 15 seconds of music, and then multiply that number by 4.
